1. What are the advantages of shoot at a higher ISO at a sporting event like basketball or a night football game?
Well with a higher ISO you can actually see who is playing. If it were to be low at a sporting event then it will be hard to tell who is playing or what game is being playing. You get to see what is happening in the photo if the ISO is higher.

2. What suggestions did the author make about using a low ISO?

Try to stick to using base ISO so you can have a chance of getting a high quality photo with not too much noise in the photo.

3. What suggestions did the author make about using a high ISO?

You should only use it if you are unable to brighten the photo's shutter speed or aperture. Otherwise you should stick with base ISO. A photo taken at too high of an ISO will also show a lot of grain (noise)

1. If you were assigned to shoot at Bulldogs and Hotdogs night, which was a few weeks ago, what shutter speeds do you think you would have to shoot at the following events that night I would like you to answer the question for the following two situations:

At the beginning while the sun was still up and the courtyard had reasonable good light

a.) a booth in the middle of the yard near the Tree
~ Fast shutter speed
b.) a food booth outside under one of the big red awnings
~Fast shutter speedc.) the Stars performance inside the gym
~Fast shutter speedd.) students dancing near the center of the courtyard
~Fast shutter speede.) people streaming in from the front doors
~Slow shutter speedf.) the basketball booth where students are shooting basketballs at a hoop

Towards the end when there is no sun and has gotten dark enough that you can't see from one end of the courtyard to the other.

2. List the three settings your camera has regarding setting shutter speed (these are found at #5 on the Shutter Speed website.

You could set the camera to auto mode so the shutter speed is selected by the camera.
But if you want to set it manually you can set the camera to shutter priority mode. Which allows you to choose the shutter speed and the camera automatically picks the aperture.
Also when you set it to manual mode you can choose shutter speed and aperture manually.

Aperture

1. What part of the body should we closely relate aperture?
We could relate aperture to the pupil because our eyes can either expand or shrink depending on what we are looking at. Which with aperture you can shrink and enlarge it just like you can with your pupils. That's why I believe the pupil can closely relate to the aperture.

2. Finish this sentence - the smaller the Aperture the darker the photo gets, the higher the Aperture the smaller it gets.

3. In your own words tell me how aperture impacts Depth of Field?
Aperture affects the depth of field depending on which aperture size you are using. Like if you are using a very large aperture (f/1.4) then the depth of field would be very thin.Which allows the background to be completely out of focus. But compared to a very small aperture (f/22.0) , the depth of field would be very large. Meaning the photo is very sharp.

Great Black and White Photographers part 3

1.) What first caught your eye while looking at your photographers photos? Is there something in particular about their photos that made you want to choose them? Post the images with your writing.
While I was looking at Brassai's artwork I was drawn to how his photos are not exactly bright photos. I like how they seem somewhat simple when you first look at it, but in reality they are more to his photos then what there seems to be. I chose his photos because I have actually been looking at Brassai for a while now. I've known about his work for about 4 or more years. There isn't a exact reason why I like them, I just like the way he takes the photos and the dark theme he has going on.

2.) Look at those 2 photos you posted last time in the assignment Great Black and White Photographers Part 2. Use your five senses to tell me more about those photos. Answer them on your blog.

~I see light being reflected off the water under the bridge. It's very foggy outside and it's hard to see because of it. But the only things I could see is the light above me coming from the street lights, the water and the way the bridge is shaped. From afar it's kinda creepy but it's also calming since no one seems to be around.
~I smell the water in front of me. It isn't a pleasant smell but it's not too bad as it seems. It is kinda swampy but at night it looks so clear and nice. It's weird how at night the water can be calming and peaceful while during the day it is the complete opposite due to the weather and people passing by.
~I hear the whispers of the wind as it passes by my ear. It too thinks that this scenery is gorgeous and loves how calming this place can be at night. I can also hear the rustles of the trees as the wind is passing through this bridge area.
~I taste the refreshing water. It isn't too bad, their is only a occasional couple of leaves that come from the trees around me. It's nice to drink the water as the leaves are falling from above into the water. The leaves dance with the wind then fall into the water and stays afloat.

~I feel the bark of the tree as I am pressing against it while looking at the bridge. It's rough but I sometimes when I'm looking at the reflection of the water. I get lost in it and doze off. Which causes me to forget what is surrounding me or what's touching me. It's ok because the reflection shows who I really am.

~I see the darkness surrounding me. As I am going deeper into the night the quieter it gets. People are probably at their houses with their family's while I am here, at the waterway. It's lonely here by myself. There is no one else walking around at this time that i'm here at.
~I smell the water as it sways away slowly. The more it sways the farther it goes. But other then that I could also smell the wind as it brings a slight scent of the park that is near by.
~I hear the water moving away from me as I try to get closer to it. I don't think it likes me, but i'll become one with it soon. It it weren't for the wind moving the water away from me, I would be able to get closer to it. At the moment the wind seems to get stronger and stronger as the night is going by. All I can hear now is the sound of it...
~I taste the bittersweetness of the wind. It's kinda like candy, but once you taste it for what it really is for a while. It becomes more and more bitter. The stronger it is, the stronger the taste.
~I feel the wind as it goes through me. It's cold, but then all of a sudden a leaf can and smacked the back of my neck. Now I feel it scratching my neck as the wind is trying to dance with it. It feels weird.

~I see a woman shaped figure as I walk pass this alley. She is just standing there looking off into the distance. I wonder if she can see or hear me as I take footsteps towards her and head into the light.
~I smell the perfume she is wearing. It's a very sweet smell, but I like it. As she stands there the smell seems to get stronger and stronger. It's circling her surroundings and is spreading out into the air as she is there.
~I hear her breathing. It sounds heavy, I wonder if she's ok. She must be in shock after seeing something she wasn't supposed to see. That might be why she is just standing there and looking off into the distance.
~I taste the air as I am trying to take a deep breath before I approach her. What should I say? What should I do? Will she walk away? These questions are constantly circling around my head as I watch her stand there with her arms to her chest.
~I feel her presence as I am approaching her. I sense a sad/shocked presence. It's unusual, I don't see anything around her causing this to happen. I should go and talk to her before she leaves in front of my eyes. I don't want to lose her so I should hurry and go towards her.

Least Unethical

ojsimpson12

I believe this photo is the least unethical because the creators of TIME magazine just added shadows to the photo just to make it look more dark and menacing since OJ Simpson was accused of murder.  Which is understandable since it is not a pleasing act to do. But Newsweek used his original mugshot that they took since he was heading to prison for doing murder. Which is why I believe this is the least unethical photo I've seen.

Most Unethical

couric12

I believe this photo was the most unethical because the person who decided to manipulate the photo (photo on the left) thought it would be better to make the woman look much more slimmer on her face and her waist so she can fit into our society's representation of what woman should supposedly look like. Which is very un-natural because the right photo (original photo) shows the women for her true self instead of the left photo (which is the edited version) is not because it was manipulated. The left photo is completely altered, the color of her outfit, her waist size, face shape, her skin color have all been altered just so it could look presentable to others.

Photo Manipulation and Ethics

A. What are some of the main points you read about in the website above regarding manipulating images?
That when you manipulate a photo, it comes with a high price. It could go terrible wrong and it would also spread false news around when people do it. It allows others to believe in the photos that were manipulated instead of looking at the actual photo they had took before they were editing it.

B. What is the philosophy of newspapers like the Washington Post and the New York times regarding image
manipulation?
The New York Times and the Washington Post photojournalists are required to turn in all of their proofs as well as their final portfolio in order for their photographs to be used by the newspapers. Today the photographers have strict guidelines on how to shoot and edit their photographs.

C. What do you think are acceptable things you could do to an image and not cross the line unto an unethical manipulation?
You could probably get away with cropping a image if you do it well enough to where people won't tell if you did it or not. But anything otherwise would be considered unethical manipulation so it wouldn't be acceptable. Simple things too such as blemish reduction and color modification which can change the original photo or the flow of one too. People need to be able to see the original version and be able to display their own feelings or thoughts towards it.

Critique on someone else's work

Positives: I love how in the photos they showed who the subject[s] were clearly. We can see exactly what they are doing in each photo which allows us viewers to know what is going on in the photo instead of being clueless. Also I like how in the photo with the liquids it shows the bubbles and evaporation taking place. It is very satisfying to look at with my eyes.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Improvement: I feel that in the photo with the three people working on a science experiment, the person who took the photo should put the camera at a angle where we can also see the fact of the girl on the left side of the photo. I believe this should improve because her face is merged with what the scope to look at specific liquids or pieces of items with. (not sure what it is called)
Academic Shoot Reflection and Critique
1. What challenges did you encounter while trying to get the photos following the rules I set out for you?
While I was trying to take the photos, I had trouble going up to people and asking them for permission to get a photo. Which affected both me and my partner because I had to ask her to do it since I was to shy or didn't want to bother people from what they were already doing. I think to much of the situation so I get lost in what I have to do. But applying the rules to my photos was somewhat hard because you have to think about which photo would look best with which rule which made it challenging as well.
2. What technical aspects of photography or the assignment in general (focus, framing, holding the camera, etc.) did you find yourself thinking about the most? Provide a specific example of what you did to do this correctly.
I found myself thinking more about the framing and the focus because while I was trying to take some of the photos there was a lot of movement happening around me, so it was hard to get a photo with not to much movement so it won't ruin the photos. Which caused their to be blurry-ness in some of the photos I took. Along with it un-focusing the camera constantly because of the other students moving and running. I even re-positioned myself multiple times just so that couldn't happen while I was taking the photos.
3. If you could do the assignment again, what would you do differently now that you know some basic rules of photography?
I would first know to pick a better place to take some photos without there being to much of a busy background or people walking around me or trying to get in the photos i'm taking while i'm shooting. Mainly because when I did that the camera unfocused a lot due to that happening to me. So I ended up with blurry photos in one of the three different locations I went to.
4. What things would you do the same?
I would do the angles and focus in the photos the same because if I did that the photos would most likely become way better then the ones a I already took with the camera. So like more appealing to the viewer or to the eye.
5. When you go out with your next set of prompts, which rule do you think will be the easiest to achieve?
The rule of thirds because it seems easier to get the scenery at a certain point on the camera while still using the rule of thirds. It just makes the photos look much more gorgeous or unique when using it, in my opinion.
6. Which rule do you think will be the hardest to capture?
I think balance would be the hardest because most areas don't have a well balanced scenery or background and it's just more harder to wait for the perfect moment to take a well balanced photo without editing or taking a extremely long time to complete it.
7. What rule are you still not totally clear on and what can you do to figure out what that rule is?
Avoiding mergers because there is some things that could be mergers but also not at the same time. So it's hard to identify what it is in general when there taking a photo. I feel like I could figure out how the rule works if I experiment it myself instead of just looking at photos from a other person's point of view. I need to see if right in front of me and do it myself in order for me to full understand how it works or how to do it.
Academic Shoot
In this photo, I used the rule of thirds. In the photo the two girls are in the bottom right corner studying or helping each other study or work on their assignment. The subject in the photo are the two girls that are studying. To me the photo shows clearly who the main subject[s] are because there is no one around them to distract the person looking at this photo from. So yes my photo is clearly showing who the main subject[s] are in the photo above.
In this photo, I used the rule of simplicity. In the photo their is two girls working on their assignment that seems to be along the lockers. Along with the guys in the background who don't seem very noticeable or seen-able to the eye since the photo is kinda blurry. The subject is supposed to be the two girls but I don't feel like it would be clear to others on what the main subject[s] is since their is something in the background that distracts the viewer from them. If I could I would retake the photo and wait for the guys in the background to get back in the classroom because I am sure that their movement caused my photo to become blurry or that my timing in the photo was just not well.
In this photo, I used to rule of avoiding mergers. In the photo the two people look like their touching but in reality they weren't. It's showing that the teacher is teaching them something. The subject of this photo is the girl who seems to be working on this sheet. It is somewhat clear that she is the subject because she is the one that is most close to the camera. To make it more clear that she is the subject I would blur the background a bit so it only focuses on her.
Great Black and White Photographers, Part 2
Brassai
Name: Gyula Halasz
Birth: September 9, 1899
Death: July 8, 1984
Brassai (Gyula Halasz) is a well known photographer around the world. He was born on September 9, 1899 in Brașov Romania, to a hungarian father and a armenian mother. At age 3 he had moved to Paris, France for a year while his father, who is a professor, was working at Sorbonne. When he was younger he studied painting and sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest before he had joined the army. Also in 1924 he had moved to Paris to spend the rest of his life there. While he was there he was working as a journalist and picked up on doing photography to use for his journalism. That's when he created his first book with his photos in it, it was named "Paris de nuit" (Paris by night). After that album he created a book called  "Pleasures of Paris" which gave him fame and made him a well known person (international fame). And became the author of seventeen books and many other articles as well.
2012 winners + questions
1. I picked this photo because I loved the way that it looked. Even though it seems somewhat simple, it really isn't. So many things can happen in this photo, plus the person's expression on their face seems kinda neutral or down-ish.
2. The rules of photography that are in this photo is simplicity because this photo doesn't seen to complicated. Most likely because the person who took this photo blurred out the background. If the background wasn't blurred then it will make the photo more complicated because it will distract the viewer from the main subject.
1. I picked this photo because I feel like there is more to this photo then their actually is. It shows that when your in junior year your main focus is on passing the major exams/tests. So everything else around them is only on that of the exam and nothing else but that. Which I believe would be very true knowing that your future could depend on how you do in school. (high school)
2. The rules of photography that are in this photo is either lines or simplicity because in the photo their is diagonal lines throughout this photo because of the lining and because of the books. Also simplicity because to most people it would just be a kid sitting on the ground reading with some books surrounding him.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

3. I think we could take photos in the library, science rooms, or just anywhere in general that involves students working on assignments or projects in their classes. That's if we want the photo to be like the ones shown in the link.
4. I would go to the library, musical classrooms, or just classrooms in general that have people working on things that seem interesting to look at. Like not something too common but unique in a way and that has depth in the place or picture.
5. I would not tell the person that i'm taking a photo of them so that they will look natural instead of being un-natural or else it will looked staged. Also I would just wait for what I believe is the golden moment in what they are doing.

Filling the frame

I think the photo shows filling in the frame because the people in the background seem to be very interested or are paying very close attention to the person with the apron. Which might be the teacher of the students with the goggles. Plus they are looking directly at the person speaking, which also proves that they are interested in what he is saying.

Action and Emotion

In the photo, the girl in the middle along with everyone else surrounding her seem to be lifting up a fabric and are trapping the girl in the middle inside. But they look happy while doing it, so I'm guessing that they think that the activity that they are doing is fun since they are smiling in the photo.

The Story

I think this photo tells a story because it shows that the girl and what seems like her friends, are having fun. It shows that they are doing a activity and from the way the girl that is in the air is expressing her feelings, it seems like she is happy and is having fun.

Post shoot reflection

1. The challenges I faced while taking the 4 photos was adding photo composition to each one and thinking which should go which each topic.

2. While taking the photos I was mostly thinking about if the photo was focusing or not, because through the camera it looked somewhat blurry. So I was unsure if it was actually blurry or not, but when I checked them on the computer they didn't seem as blurry compared to them.

3. I found myself changing because when I found something that I think will fit the topic, I would just stand there in front of it thinking which composition I should use which took a while. So when I was actually taking the photo I found myself often adjusting to fit the composition.

4. I achieved rule of thirds, simplicity, and lines in my photos that I had took. I felt like I was taking to long to apply them so I thought of what first came to my mind or what I think would look best when applied to my photos. 1 rule of thirds (metal), 1 simplicity (bowie), and 2 lines photo (happy and square)

4. Yes because I feel like I can do better then I did this time. I will know not to rush if given a second chance and to have more rules to apply to in the photos if I take them.

5. The 3 prompts I think we should do at school are

  • Dark
  • Angry
  • Calming

  • I love how her photos seem simple but weren't at the same time. I especially loved the locker photo and how the background on the photo is blurred, so it only focuses on the locker itself. Also that it faded out with darkness towards the end of the hallway. Plus the lockers look never ending.
  • In her 'happy photo' I like how it shows the sky when everything else is dark surrounding the sky itself. The picture looks framed with the windows and the shadows in the photo, then the sky is just sticking out completely.
  • One thing I think could be improved is the lines photo that she has. If the turning point of the lines on the top part of the photo was cut out, I believe the photo would look much more appealing to the eye or to others in general.
