Sports Portfolios

Part 1 - Portfolios

1. Watch 4 of the 11 Runner-up videos, and answer the following on your blog for each:

a. Name of photographer - Alyssa Schukar
b. General focus of portfolio - Eating disorders and just sports
c. List three problems that the judges noted with the portfolio?
They said the only thing that was missing was the eating disorder stories. They also said that they want to see more of the big stuff being shown in the stories because almost everything is the same lens and feel. Another thing is that there isn't any strong symbols in the photos.
d. List two things the judges like -
They liked the girl that fell over the hurdles and the kids in the stairway photo.
e.  What is your overall impression of the photographer? What did you like or not like?
- My overall impression of the photographer was that they are pretty good at capturing a deep feel/emotion. I liked just looking at the photos in general, they actually made me feel something rather than it just being a regular picture of anything and doesn't show any emotion. I can also tell what is happening in the photo which is another thing that I really liked about the photo.

a. Name of photographer - Nick Adams
b. General focus of portfolio - Life isn't easy
c. List three problems that the judges noted with the portfolio?
They did not like how the photo of the cheerleaders are out of focus and how the leg is cut off in the background. They believe there should be a limit on how many photos there are with kids who are handicapped. Also they didn't like how this picture with a football player that is in black and white has one of the players head's cut off.
d. List two things the judges like -
They liked the photo with the cheerleaders and the silhouettes photo
e.  What is your overall impression of the photographer? What did you like or not like?
-My overall impression of the photographer is decent. I noticed that most of his photos was just pictures of children with each photo being a different emotion. Which does stand out but it didn't exactly appeal to me as much.

a. Name of photographer - Justin Mott
b. General focus of portfolio - Glimpse into reality and toughness
c. List three problems that the judges noted with the portfolio?
The second photo was not in focus so they did not like it.  Also they like how the photographer is trying something different, from the point of views they take the photos in. He doesn't like the picture with someones hand grabbing some tools, they don't believe it tells a story.
d. List two things the judges like -
They also like the photo where there was a dead pig on the ground with a fire in the background. Also they like how the photographer is trying something different, from the point of views they take the photos in
e. What is your overall impression of the photographer? What did you like or not like?
- My overall impression of the photographer is good because I liked how each photo had conveyed a feeling that can only be felt if you understand and just look past the surface of the photo. There was nothing that I did not like about the photo, I loved all of their photos.

a. Name of photographer - Melissa Golden
b. General focus of portfolio - Elders and young kids
c. List three problems that the judges noted with the portfolio?
They think that some of the photos are messy. Also they don't like how there is unwanted items in the photos. Also another problem for them is seeing the same story over again.
d. List two things the judges like -
They like the photo with the old man zoomed up close with a oxygen tube going through his nose. They liked the picture with the guy sliding into a baseball base.
e.  What is your overall impression of the photographer? What did you like or not like?
- My overall impression of the photographer is decent because I understand that the people in the photo didn't go through things much differently than each other. They are both at different ages but from different time periods. I didn't exactly like how they had the children just do playful things, they could have took or added pictures that are meaningful as well.

2. Watch the winning portfolio critique (Dustin Snipes)

a. What did the judges note as strengths as they were critiquing it?
They liked the composition and color of most photos. Also how overall the photos are and the angling.
b. What do you see as strengths? Do you see any weaknesses?
- Yes, I did see some weaknesses. They had some cut offs in some of the photos which isn't well if you are having your photos judged. I believe the strengths would be the angles and how they decided to take the photo. As if they were actually running or moving with the athletes.

3. Watch the contest recap video at the very bottom
a. Briefly describe the process the judges went through in deciding the winner
-  They each bring up the photos that they individually liked then the other judges would give their opinion on it. If the other judges did not like it then they would move on to the next image and it just goes on and on through this process. Along with comparing the photos to the other photos to see if their photos match with the rest of their portfolio.

Part 2 - Individual Images

1. Describe one photo that you agree with the judges on. Explain why you and the judges do or do not like it.
- I agree with the judges when they were critiquing the person with in 3rd place about his black and white sports photos. It did seem like he was waiting/relying on taking the perfect photo at the perfect time that he thought was right, because otherwise they would shoot any type of photo of them doing any type of pose.
2. Describe one photo that you DO NOT agree with the judges on. Explain why you think the judges are wrong.
- I don't like how they liked the picture of the girl getting attacked by a swan/duck. It tells a story but otherwise I don't really like the photo. I don't exactly believe it tells a story, its just her showing a disgusted/irritated emotion towards the animal.
