American Soldier

A. I believe this is the most powerful image from the pictures in the Denver Post because it shows what Fisher and his squad had to go through when they were doing their first big exercise. During it they were hit by a improvised explosive device which if didn't go well, would have killed half of the squad.

B. The images work together because it tells us how Fisher became a part of the military and what made him chose to join it. It shows what type of drills and what type of people he met while there. But before that he was looking for a fight which made him come to the conclusion of joining in and letting his family know about it. They threw him a goodbye party before he had went.

C. How do the captions enhance the photographs?

It gives us a summary of what was happening in the photos if we weren't to look at it or don't know what it exactly happening. It could tell us more then what the picture itself can tell us from just looking at it.

D. Ian Fisher was looking for a fight, so he decided he wanted to join the military. After he decided what he wanted to do he told his parents and they threw him a goodbye party since they won't see him for a while. He then had to get checkups to make sure he was eligible to join the military. Once that was over his father decided to wait for the recruiter to take Ian away. Once he says his goodbyes, he started his training which was tough. They did many drills and had to get used to different weather types for any situation that could happen. But even though it was hard for him, all of it payed off and he got the glory he wanted.

E. The verbs are written in present tense when Ian is the main subject of the photos. I believe it's because the people who wrote the Denver post wanted us (the readers) to know what happened at that exact moment the photos were taken. Make it seem like we were actually there (not really, but kinda)

F. Break down the captions:

1. The sentences on average are about 3 sentences long.

2. The first sentence of the captions are mainly about the what is happening in the photo and who was there while it happened. Or the time it happened at.
3. The second sentence tell us what they are doing and what is being said.
4. Some of them have third sentences, the ones that do can tell us the aftermath of what happened in the photo or situation that was happening.
5. There is some captions that have a quote in it.
6. Not really unless you consider it still mentioning what was said in that situation or picture/time

G. I think it's possible to tell a complete story with just photos and captions because it is all in the order, so we will know when it happens. Plus the captions tell us what happened during that point of time which kinda gives us a little summary of what happened in that part of the article.

H. Well because in the story it tells us also from other peoples point of views as well. Which the captions can show us every single thing that has happened. There is most likely something in the story that is important and is not mentioned in the captions throughout the story.
